Life after Love

We said our goodbyes and left. I hinted at her that my phone was messed up and now communication would be difficult. Little did she know that by difficult I meant impossible.

I was scared to be home.

‘Oh, Aarav! You are dripping wet! Go and change before you fall ill!’ my mother exclaimed. I was sure her concern would soon turn into mad anger. I did not have the courage to tell her about her phone, so I quietly placed the corpse on the table. I received only a cold stare from her at that moment. She looked through me every time I was sitting in the way of something she needed. The rest of the days till school reopened passed in silence. Silence of the graveyard is the best phrase to describe the setting. This is how I spent the rest of the days of my vacation—with a dead phone, and a perpetual ashamed look on my face.

School reopened in a few days. I was relieved. I would get to meet Anamika again. Lost in anticipation, the moment I entered school, I went looking for her. Friends were hugging and celebrating their reunion just like last year. Only this time, I too was a part of it. A light tickle near my waist stirred me. Her chuckle brought my heart to a halt.

‘How have you been, Mister Aarav?’ she asked, looking at me with her smiling brown eyes.

‘How do you expect me to be when you are not around?’ I quipped.

She blushed.

‘Well, we’re getting late for our classes. We must leave. See you then,’ she said as she took my hand and pressed it softly with both her hands. The bell for recess rang and all of us jumped out of our seats. Anamika came to our class, smiling at me, and went to where Sunaina and Shanaya were sitting.

‘Let’s reach the canteen before the growls of my stomach humiliate all of you.’ Karan grabbed me and Aniket by the shoulder and we marched out of the room. I saw her gaze following me from the corner of my eyes. It made me feel good.

When we got back to class, Anamika was still there. She walked out as I walked in. She hooked her little finger into mine and murmured something that I couldn’t understand. By then, the teacher had entered, giving her final command to settle down. I was physically there, but mentally I was in the adjacent room.

I could not concentrate on studies that day. When the final bell rang, I saw Anamika standing with Sunaina and Shanaya, busy in a conversation. We shared another loving look and a smile. How I loved those moments!

The institution where I went for coaching was not very far from the school and I used to get there walking. Anamika lived two blocks away from the school, so no school bus for her as well.

‘Institute today?’ She came to me.

I nodded in reply and smiled.

‘I told Mum that I need to join an institute,’ she said.
